Curtain Cleaning Services in Australia

Take a lined curtain down, wash it, and there is a fair chance it never hangs the same way again. Curtain cleaning in Australia goes wrong at the laundry rather than the window, because lining shrinks at a different rate to the face fabric and the hems pucker. Sheers, lined drapes, blockout and thermal, in Darwin, Perth, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Tasmania.

We clean them on the rail, with the method matched to what the fabric and the backing can actually take. You get before and after photos of every set. From $55 including GST, and our cleaners don't leave until you're happy with the work.

  • Nothing comes down, nothing gets re-hung
  • Low moisture on coated blockout linings

Why do we clean curtains on the rail instead of taking them down?

Because removal is where the damage happens. Fabric can shrink in a wash, and a lining often shrinks further than the face fabric it is sewn to, which is what puckers a hem permanently.

Cleaning in place skips all of it. No hooks pulled, no weights lost, no panel coming back two centimetres shorter than its neighbour.

The method depends on the backing. Ordinary fabric and sheers take steam. Coated blockout linings do not, because heat and moisture delaminate the coating and it flakes.

If mould has gone through a lining rather than sitting on the surface, that is a different conversation. See mould cleaning, or window cleaning for the glass and tracks behind them.

When do curtains actually need cleaning?

Three patterns cover almost every booking.

Every one to two years

Standard households. Dust and airborne grease build up long before anything looks dirty.

After a damp winter

Spotting on the back where the fabric meets cold glass. The earlier this is caught the better it goes.

Before a sale or inspection

Curtains photograph badly once they have greyed. Buyers and agents both notice it.

Which window coverings can our crews treat?

Checked at the rail before anything starts, because the backing decides the method.

Sheers and unlined

  • Voile and polyester sheers
  • Linen and cotton unlined panels
  • Cafe curtains and half sheers
  • Net curtains
  • Kitchen and laundry panels

Lined and heavy drapes

  • Cotton and linen lined sets
  • Velvet and textured weaves
  • Pinch pleat and wave fold
  • Full length floor drapes
  • Pelmets and valances

Blockout and thermal

  • Acrylic foam backed panels
  • Rubber and multi-pass coatings
  • Thermal insulating linings
  • Separate blockout liners
  • Low moisture method only

Checked before we start

  • Care label and fibre type
  • Whether the backing is coated
  • Existing perish or flaking
  • Sun damage along leading edges
  • Mould on the reverse face

A backing that has already cracked or gone powdery cannot be saved by cleaning. We tell you that at the rail rather than after the invoice.

How does cleaning work with the curtains still hanging?

Four steps, and the first one decides the other three.

Contact us
  1. Step 01

    Read the backing

Label, fibre and coating checked, then a spot test on a hidden fold.

  2. Step 02

    Dry soil removal

Dust pulled out first. Wetting a dusty curtain turns it into mud in the weave.

  3. Step 03

    Treat to the method

Steam for ordinary fabric, low moisture for coated linings, and floors protected throughout.

  4. Step 04

    Report and sign-off

Photos of both faces, and our cleaners don't leave until you're happy with the work.

Why do Australian curtains fail from both sides at once?

The front takes the full Australian sun. The back sits against cold or humid glass. Two different attacks on the same panel.

  • The sun side. Australian UV fades natural fibres fast and breaks down blockout coatings. West-facing windows go first
  • The glass side. Mould forms on the reverse where fabric meets the window. Coated linings and unlined panels are the worst affected
  • Melbourne and Tasmania. Winter condensation on single glazing runs down onto hems. Spotting on the back is the usual job
  • Darwin, Brisbane and Sydney. Humid air keeps the reverse face damp for months at a time
  • Perth and Adelaide. Dry heat and long exposure. Fabric goes brittle and fades before it ever looks dirty

Pull a curtain forward and look at the back. That is the side that tells you where it is up to.

Why does taking curtains down cost more than it saves?

Four things that decide whether curtains survive being cleaned.

Curtain cleaning in Australia done on the rail

Washing can shrink fabric, and a lining often shrinks more than the face fabric it is sewn to. That is what puckers a hem, and it does not come back out.

Cleaning in place removes the risk entirely. Nothing is unhooked, nothing is lost, and nothing hangs shorter than the panel beside it afterwards.

Blockout curtains need low moisture, not hot steam

Acrylic foam and rubber backings delaminate under heat and heavy moisture. Once a coating flakes, the blockout performance goes with it and the panel needs replacing.

We check the backing before anything starts and drop to a low moisture method wherever a coating is present. The same steam pass on every curtain in the house is how blockout gets ruined.

We look at the back, where Australian curtains actually fail

Mould forms on the reverse face where fabric meets the glass, and most people never pull the curtain forward to check. By the time it shows through, the lining is often gone.

Our crews inspect both faces at the rail. If the growth has gone through a coated lining rather than sitting on it, we say so instead of taking the money.

A photo report on every curtain clean in Australia

Curtain results are hard to judge in the room they hang in, because your eye has been adjusting to the fade for years.

You get before and after shots of the front and the back of every set, along with any perish, sun damage or existing marks we found on the way. Nothing gets quietly cleaned over and left for you to discover later.

A curtain is only as safe to clean as its backing. That is why we read the back before we touch the front.

What protects your curtains while we work?

Custom curtains cost thousands to replace. Here is what backs the job.

What do curtain cleaning customers notice?

What does curtain cleaning cost in Australia?

Priced per set. Count your windows and you can work it out before you call.

Scope NSW VIC QLD WA SA TAS NT
Small curtain set $65 $65 $59 $60 $55 $55 $65
Medium curtain set $95 $89 $85 $85 $79 $75 $95
Large curtain set $125 $120 $115 $115 $105 $105 $125
Blockout / heavy lined set From $160 $150 $140 $145 $135 $130 $160

Blockout costs more because the method changes. Coated linings need a low moisture treatment and slower work, not the same steam pass at a higher price.

Doing a whole house at once costs less per set. We are already there and the equipment is already out.

What do people ask about curtain cleaning?

Do the curtains have to come down?

No, and that is the point of the service. Removing lined curtains is where most damage happens, because lining shrinks at a different rate to the face fabric and hems pucker permanently. We work at the rail, so nothing is unhooked and nothing needs re-hanging afterwards.

Can you clean blockout or rubber-backed curtains?

Yes, with a low moisture method rather than steam. Acrylic foam and rubber coatings delaminate under heat and heavy moisture, which destroys the blockout performance permanently. We check the backing at the rail first and drop the method to suit it.

Will my curtains shrink?

Not when they are cleaned in place. Shrinkage comes from saturation and drying, which is what happens in a machine or a dry cleaning drum rather than on a rail. Cleaning in place is how we avoid that risk.

How long until they are dry?

Usually two to four hours for ordinary fabric, and less for a low moisture treatment on coated linings. Open the window and the room moves along faster. We give you the drying window before we start.

Can you get mould out of curtains?

Surface growth on ordinary fabric usually comes out. Mould that has gone through a coated blockout lining rather than sitting on it generally will not, and at that point relining costs less than repeated attempts. We look at both faces and tell you which one you have.

How often should curtains be cleaned?

Every one to two years suits most homes. Move to yearly if you are on a main road, near the coast, or in a room where condensation forms on the glass in winter. Vacuuming them with a soft brush in between makes a real difference.

We stay until it's right

Our cleaners don't leave until you're happy with the work. For end of lease cleans, if you're not satisfied and tell us within 72 hours, we come back and re-clean.
