Leather Cleaning in Melbourne

Leather Cleaning & Conditioning Services in Melbourne

Real leather does not peel. It cracks and fades and wears smooth, but it never flakes off in sheets. If yours is flaking, it is reconstituted leather and nothing puts that back. We will tell you that on the phone rather than at your door.

We check what you have before quoting. Real leather gets cleaned, fed and protected, and a three seater is $269 including GST. In Melbourne most of the wear comes from the months of winter heating that dry it out. Dining chairs are $50 each.

Is it actually leather?

It matters more than anything else on this page. Reconstituted leather is ground up scraps mixed with polyurethane and pressed onto a fabric backing, and plenty of it was sold as genuine leather.

It lasts a few years and then the surface separates from the backing. Once that starts it spreads, and no filler or coating can hold a surface layer that has already come away.

The test is simple. Real leather cracks, creases and fades. Peeling and flaking in sheets means reconstituted leather, and that is a replacement rather than a clean.

All of this only makes sense on real hide. For fabric lounges see upholstery cleaning in Melbourne.

Which leather finish do you have?

We identify which one you have before quoting, because the method changes completely.

Pigmented

Most family lounges. A polymer topcoat sits over the hide, so it cleans and protects well and handles daily use.

Aniline and semi-aniline

Softer, more natural, and far more absorbent. Water marks it and strong products strip it, so everything goes on lightly.

Nubuck and suede

Napped rather than smooth. It cannot be treated like a finished hide, and a normal leather clean will flatten the nap permanently.

A retail leather conditioner cannot soak through a pigmented topcoat. Rubbing one into a family lounge achieves very little beyond a shine that lasts a week.

What does a leather clean involve?

Four stages, and the last two are what make it last.

Identify and test

  • Hide and finish identified
  • Reconstituted leather ruled in or out
  • Tested in a hidden spot
  • Existing damage photographed
  • Realistic result explained

Clean

  • Dry soil and grit removed first
  • Seams, piping and creases by hand
  • Body oils lifted off headrests
  • Under and behind the cushions
  • pH balanced, never solvent

Condition

  • Matched to the finish
  • Worked into creases and folds
  • Left to absorb properly
  • Buffed back, not left greasy

Protect

  • Protective coat applied
  • Barrier against body oils
  • High wear areas done twice
  • Care instructions left with you
  • Return interval recommended

Cracks, tears, scuffs and faded colour need leather repair rather than conditioning. We offer it too, quoted once we have seen the piece.

Where does leather wear first?

Four places, and none of them are the middle of a cushion.

Contact us
  1. Step 01

    The headrest

Body oils and hair product break the finish down where heads rest. It goes dark, then sticky, then bare.

  2. Step 02

    The arms

Hands, forearms and sleeves. Same oils, same result, usually on the side people sit on most.

  3. Step 03

    The seat creases

Where the hide folds it loses moisture fastest, and that is where the first fine cracks show up.

  4. Step 04

    The side facing the heat

Whichever end sits nearest a ducted outlet or a hydronic panel dries out well before the rest.

Why does leather dry out in Melbourne?

Melbourne homes run heating through the cold months, and heated indoor air is dry air.

  • Months of heating. Ducted air or hydronic panels running daily through winter, pulling moisture out of everything in the room
  • Furniture placement. Lounges get pushed against walls and near vents, and the end nearest the heat always cracks first
  • North facing windows. Period homes and apartments with big glass fade one side of a lounge while the other stays original

Twice a year suits most Melbourne homes. Once before winter and once after it, which is when the damage is actually done.

What should you check before booking a leather clean?

Three things that decide whether the money is well spent.

That it is real leather

Real leather cracks, creases and fades, but it does not peel. Flaking in sheets means reconstituted leather, and cleaning will not stop it. Send us a photo and we will tell you which you have before we quote.

That the product matches the finish

Most family lounges are pigmented, with a polymer topcoat a supermarket conditioner cannot soak through. Aniline needs a much lighter hand. We test on a hidden spot before anything visible.

Whether it needs repair as well

Cleaning and conditioning bring a tired hide a long way back. Cracks, tears and faded colour need leather repair, which we quote after we see the piece, so you know before you pay anything.

What backs a product on your lounge?

Leather is expensive to replace. Here is what sits behind the job.

Hide identified first

Before a price, let alone a product.

Our cleaners stay until you're happy

Our cleaners don't leave until you're happy with the work.

Tested out of sight

Every product, on every new piece.

Conditioned and protected

Not a wipe over and a shine.

We decline reconstituted leather

Rather than take money for nothing.

What do Melbourne customers ask about leather cleaning?

How much does leather cleaning cost in Melbourne?

A dining chair is $50 and a three seater is $269, both including GST. An armchair or recliner is $115, a two seater $235 and a four seater $340. Every price covers cleaning, conditioning and protection, and it is fixed before we arrive.

Why is my leather couch peeling?

Because it is almost certainly not leather. Real hide cracks, creases and fades but never flakes off in sheets. Peeling means reconstituted leather, which is ground scraps and polyurethane on a fabric backing, and it was often sold as genuine leather.

Can peeling reconstituted leather be fixed?

No, and we will tell you that rather than take the booking. Once the surface separates from the backing it keeps going, and no filler or coating can hold a layer that has already come away. Realistically it needs replacing rather than restoring.

Does the conditioner I bought actually do anything?

On a pigmented lounge, very little. A polymer topcoat sits over the hide on most family furniture, and a retail conditioner cannot soak through it. You get a shine for about a week, which is why the product has to be matched to the finish.

How often should leather be cleaned in Melbourne?

Twice a year suits most homes here. Once before winter and once after, because months of ducted or hydronic heating is what dries the hide out. Lounges that get daily use or sit near a vent do better on that schedule.

Why does one end of my lounge look worse?

Because of where it sits. The end nearest a heating vent or a hydronic panel loses moisture faster than the rest. A north facing window fades one side while the other stays original.

Do you do aniline, nubuck or suede?

Yes, and they are identified before anything touches them. Aniline is far more absorbent so everything goes on lightly, and nubuck and suede are napped rather than smooth. Treating those like a finished hide flattens the nap permanently.

Do you repair leather?

Yes. Cracks, tears, scuffs and faded colour are quoted after we have seen the piece, because the damage decides the method. Send a photo with your cleaning enquiry and we will tell you whether it needs repair as well.

We stay until it's right

Our cleaners don't leave until you're happy with the work. For end of lease cleans, if you're not satisfied and tell us within 72 hours, we come back and re-clean.
