Mould Cleaning in Melbourne

Mould Cleaning Services in Melbourne

Bleach makes mould disappear without removing it. On plaster or grout the colour lifts and the growth stays behind, so it comes back the next winter, often darker than before.

We clean visible mould off the surface. A bathroom or small area is $299 and a single wall or ceiling starts at $410. Growth that has gone into plaster or linings needs mould remediation, which we quote after an inspection. A leak or poor ventilation is for the owner, a plumber or a builder to fix, and we tell you what we saw.

Why does bleach not fix mould?

Bleach removes the colour. On a non-porous surface like glass or a shower screen that can be enough, because there is nothing underneath for it to hide in.

Plaster, grout, timber and silicone are porous. The bleach whitens the surface while the water in it soaks down and feeds what is left.

So the stain goes and the mould does not. It comes back in the same spot once the weather turns again.

For grout lines specifically see tile and grout cleaning in Melbourne. For curtain hems, see curtain cleaning.

Which clean does your mould need?

Two surface cleans priced by area, and remediation quoted once we have seen it.

Bathroom or small area, $299

Visible growth on a bathroom ceiling, walls, window reveals or a small patch elsewhere. Cleaned off and treated with an antifungal.

Wall or ceiling, from $410

A full wall or ceiling where surface mould has spread across it. Same method, more area.

Into the material, quoted

Mould inside plaster, linings or a wall cavity needs remediation: the area contained, affected linings removed and the room cleaned under control. We inspect first and quote it, with no published price.

What happens on the day?

Four stages, and the first one decides the other three.

Look first

  • Area and surface checked
  • Extraction fan checked it runs
  • Window seals and reveals looked at
  • Signs of a leak noted for the owner
  • Price confirmed before we start

Protect

  • Floors and contents covered
  • Room aired while we work
  • Occupants kept clear of the work area
  • Wardrobes and furniture moved where needed

Clean

  • Visible growth physically removed
  • Antifungal applied to the surface
  • Reveals and sills done by hand
  • Surfaces wiped down and dried

Note and photograph

  • What we saw written down plainly
  • Photographs before and after
  • Anything for a plumber or builder flagged
  • Ventilation tips for the room
  • Copy you can send to an agent

We clean the visible mould on surfaces. If a leak, a failed seal or poor ventilation is feeding it, it will come back until the owner has that fixed.

Who looks after mould in a Victorian rental?

It depends on the cause.

Contact us
  1. Step 01

    Free from mould and damp

Victorian rental minimum standards require rooms to be free of mould and damp caused by the building structure.

  2. Step 02

    Structure versus use

Damp from the building sits with the rental provider. Mould from not using a fan that works does not.

  3. Step 03

    Tell your agent in writing

Report it early, with photographs, so there is a record.

  4. Step 04

    Our note helps

A written note of what we saw, with photos, that you can forward to an agent.

Why is Melbourne mould a winter problem?

Up north the mould season runs through the wet. Down here it runs through the cold, and for the opposite reason.

  • Heating season. Heating warms the air and warm air holds more moisture. It then meets a cold external wall and lets it go
  • Single glazing. Glass is the coldest surface in most older Melbourne rooms, so condensation forms there first and runs into the reveal
  • Closed houses. Few people open a window in July, so the moisture from showers, cooking and drying clothes stays inside
  • Behind the furniture. Wardrobes against cold external walls stop air moving, which is why mould is often found when something gets shifted

Clothes dried indoors are the cause people rarely suspect. A load of washing puts a lot of water into the air.

Why does mould keep coming back in the same spot?

Three things that decide whether it stays gone.

The water is still there

Mould is a sign of moisture. A blocked extraction fan, a failed seal or a leak keeps feeding it no matter what goes on the surface.

We point out what we saw, and the fix belongs to the owner, a plumber or a builder.

It was bleached, not cleaned

On porous surfaces bleach lifts the colour while the growth stays. We physically remove the visible growth and apply an antifungal to the surface instead.

The room never airs out

A bathroom fan that is not run, a closed bedroom with clothes drying in it, or a wardrobe hard against an outside wall. Small changes in how the room is used make a real difference.

What do Melbourne customers ask about mould cleaning?

How much does mould cleaning cost in Melbourne?

A bathroom or small area is $299 including GST, and a single wall or ceiling starts at $410. Send a photo and we will tell you which one fits before we come out.

Does bleach kill mould?

Not on porous surfaces. On glass or a shower screen it can work, because there is nothing underneath for mould to sit in. On plaster, grout, timber or silicone it lifts the colour while the water in it soaks down and feeds the rest.

Is my landlord responsible for mould in Victoria?

It depends on the cause. Victorian rental minimum standards require rooms to be free of mould and damp caused by the building structure. Tell your agent in writing, and our note and photos can go with it.

Do I need cleaning or remediation?

It depends what is under the surface. Growth sitting on a sound surface cleans off. Mould that has gone into plaster, linings or a wall cavity needs remediation, which we quote after an inspection.

Will the mould come back?

It will if the moisture is still there. A blocked fan, a failed seal or a leak keeps feeding it, and fixing that is a job for the owner, a plumber or a builder. We point out what we saw.

Is mould in the house a health risk?

We are cleaners and not qualified to advise on health. If anyone in the house has symptoms they are worried about, speak to a doctor. What we can do is clean the visible mould off properly and tell you what we saw.

Do you replace mouldy silicone?

No. Mould grows inside silicone, so it cannot be cleaned back to white. Cutting it out and replacing it is a small trade job, and we will tell you which corners need it.

How long does it take?

A bathroom or small area usually takes a few hours, and a wall or ceiling most of a day. We give you a realistic timeframe once we have seen it.

What other cleaning do we do in Melbourne?

Most customers book more than one. Same crews, same standards, one invoice.
