Leather Cleaning and Conditioning in Darwin

Leather cleaning in Darwin is really about mould. Leather left in humid air grows it, and a home running on louvres and fans stays humid right through the wet season from November to April.

We identify what your leather actually is before anything touches it, clean to the finish rather than to a formula, and condition lightly, because a greasy residue in this climate feeds the next bloom. Dining chairs start at $55 and a three seater is $280.

  • Leather type identified first, aniline to pigmented
  • Mould cleaned off the hide, not just wiped over
  • Conditioned for a tropical climate, not a southern one
  • Published NT rates, from $55

Why does leather go mouldy in a Darwin house?

Because of where the indoor humidity lands. A room running on louvres and fans through the wet season stays far more humid than one with the air conditioning on.

Mould grows on leather when it sits in humid air for long enough, and the longer and damper it is, the faster it appears. A Darwin wet season gives it months.

Mould growth can permanently mark leather. That is why catching it early matters more than cleaning it well later.

What should you know before anyone cleans your leather?

Four things that decide how a lounge should be treated.

Too damp and too dry both hurt it

Damp air encourages mould, and very dry air makes leather lose moisture and go brittle. A Darwin home can swing between the two depending on whether the aircon is on.

Work out what the leather is first

A drop of water tells you. On aniline it soaks in within a few seconds, and that leather cannot be wet cleaned. On pigmented leather, which covers most furniture, it beads on the surface and wet cleaning is fine.

In Darwin, condition less, not more

The products applied to leather to keep it supple can themselves feed mould. In a humid climate, light and less often is the safer approach.

Sun damage does not come back

Top End sun is strong all year, and light damage to leather builds up and cannot be reversed. Cleaning will not undo a faded arm, but recolouring as a repair can, quoted once we see it.

What is in a leather clean?

Four stages, matched to the finish rather than run to a script.

Identify and test

  • Water drop test on a hidden panel
  • Aniline, semi-aniline or pigmented
  • Reconstituted leather and vinyl called out honestly
  • You hear what will not come back

Clean whole panels

  • pH balanced for leather, not household
  • Whole panels, never spots
  • Seams, piping and stitching worked
  • Under cushions and the back panel

Clean off any mould

  • Bloom removed off the hide
  • Not wiped into the grain
  • Musty odour dealt with at source
  • Told straight if staining is permanent

Condition, lightly

  • Matched to the finish
  • No silicone, no wax, no oils
  • Nothing left tacky for mould to feed on
  • Buffed back, not loaded up

What happens on the day?

Done in your home. Nothing gets carted away.

  1. Step 01

    Tested before touched

The water drop test happens on a hidden panel, in front of you, before any product comes out of the kit.

  2. Step 02

    Everything comes with the team

Leather specific products and cloths arrive with the cleaners, and nothing household goes near the hide.

  3. Step 03

    Cleaned and conditioned

Panel by panel and cushion by cushion, then a light conditioner matched to the finish.

  4. Step 04

    Photo report and care notes

Before and after on each piece, plus what to do about the wall gap and the aircon so it lasts.

Is your lounge actually leather?

Worth checking, because furniture sold as leather is not always full leather.

Some lounges are reconstituted leather, made from leather scraps and offcuts bound with polyurethane onto a backing. It tends to peel rather than wear, and once the coating lifts, cleaning will not stop it.

We tell you which one you have at the inspection. If it is already peeling, we will say the clean is not worth your money.

Do you do commercial leather in Darwin?

Yes. Boardroom and office seating, hotel and venue furniture, restaurant booths and waiting rooms, across the CBD, Casuarina and Palmerston.

One warning worth having in writing. Commercial seating is often vinyl rather than leather, and vinyl must never be treated with leather conditioner.

We identify each piece before quoting, and book early-morning cleans from 6am before you open, or evening cleans until 10pm after you close.

What do people ask about leather in the Top End?

Can a leather lounge go mouldy in the wet season?

Yes, and it is the most common leather problem in Darwin. A lounge in a room without air conditioning sits in humid air for months between November and April, and mould can mark leather permanently, so it is worth acting on early.

How much does leather cleaning cost in Darwin?

A dining chair is $55, a three seater is $280 and a five to six seat modular starts at $450, all including GST and covering clean and condition. Heavy mould, and nubuck or suede, are quoted after we have seen the piece.

How do I know what type of leather I have?

Put a drop of water on a hidden spot. If it soaks in within a few seconds it is aniline, which cannot be wet cleaned, and if it beads on the surface it is pigmented, which cleans easily. Fuzzy and darkening on contact means nubuck or suede, which take no liquid at all.

How often should leather be conditioned in Darwin?

Less often than down south. The products used to keep leather supple can feed mould, so a heavy coat in the wet season works against you.

Can you fix cracking, peeling or fading?

Not with a clean, but often with a repair. Cracks, scuffs and faded panels can be filled and recoloured, and we quote that after we have seen the piece. Peeling reconstituted leather is the exception, because once the coating lifts it cannot be properly repaired.

My lounge is reconstituted leather. Is it worth cleaning?

Usually not, if it has started peeling. Once the top coat lifts, a clean will tidy it but it will not stop the peeling spreading, and we will tell you that at the inspection rather than take the booking.

How long does it take and when can we sit on it?

Roughly one to two hours a piece, and a couple of hours before normal use. Give it longer before putting a throw or a cover back on, because trapping moisture against the hide is how the problem started.

Will cleaning change the colour or leave patches?

Not if whole panels are cleaned rather than spots. Spot cleaning is what creates halos, so we work panel by panel, and on aniline we test a hidden area first.

We stay until it's right

Our cleaners don't leave until you're happy with the work. For end of lease cleans, if you're not satisfied and tell us within 72 hours, we come back and re-clean.
