What does retail cleaning have to cover that an office does not?

Members of the public, all day, on a floor you are responsible for. That changes the job.

In an office the cleaning standard is mostly about presentation. In a shop it is also about safety, and a record of when each area was checked helps you show the floor was looked after.

That is why retail runs two layers. Day cleaning keeps the floor presentable and picks up hazards during trade, and the before-open or after-close clean restores what a trading day takes out of it.

Two things sit outside our scope. Deli, bakery and food preparation areas inside a supermarket carry food safety obligations of their own. Waste compaction and bin collection sit with your centre or your waste contractor.

For venues serving food, see restaurant and cafe cleaning. For centre common areas rather than a tenancy, see strata and common area cleaning.

Do you clean during trade or outside it?

Both, inside our hours of 6am to 10pm, seven days. They are different jobs with different scopes.

Day presentation

Periodic floor checks through trade, entry matting, spills and customer amenities. The layer that creates your record.

Before open or after close

Full floor work, back of house, glass and fitting rooms from 6am before you open, or in the evening once the doors close, finishing by 10pm.

Peak and periodic

Scaled up through Christmas trade, sale events and school holidays, plus scheduled deep work between them.

How does the record get built?

If somebody slips, the first thing anyone asks for is when that area was last checked.

  4. Step 04

    Hazards logged, not just fixed

Which areas of a store do we cover?

Split between the day layer and the before-open or after-close layer, with a frequency on every line.

Sales floor

  • Hard floors scrubbed and buffed
  • Traffic lanes and aisle ends
  • Entry matting lifted and cleaned
  • Spot mopping through trade
  • Shelving edges and end caps

Customer areas

  • Fitting rooms and mirrors
  • Counters, POS and handrails
  • Customer toilets and baby change
  • Entry and display glass
  • Seating and pram parking

Back of house

  • Stock room and receiving
  • Staff room and lockers
  • Loading dock and bin area
  • Office and admin space
  • Cool room exteriors and seals

Where slips start

  • Saturated entry matting
  • Refrigeration leak trails
  • Aisle end spills near produce
  • Wet floor signs left out all day
  • Lifting vinyl and worn nosings

Showroom work carries a glass and detail bias instead, and is scoped separately.

What does centre management ask a contractor for?

Lodged before the first attendance.

Centre requirements

  • Contractor induction completed
  • Loading dock and lift bookings
  • Access approval outside trading hours
  • Waste room and compactor rules

Safety documentation

  • Safe Work Method Statements
  • Safety Data Sheets for every chemical
  • Site-specific risk assessment
  • Wet floor signage procedure

Tenancies inside a centre inherit the centre's rules on top of their own. We handle that paperwork.

Why does the weather outside decide the risk inside?

Many retail slips start at the door. Water and grit walk in on shoes, and how often that happens depends on where you trade.

  • Darwin. Through the wet season every entry is a hazard every day. Matting saturates quickly and stops working long before anyone notices.
  • Melbourne, Hobart and Adelaide. Winter rain tracked across hard floors for months. The interval between floor checks matters as much as the standard of the clean.
  • Perth. Sand as well as water. It scratches hard floors and defeats matting in a different way.
  • Sydney and Brisbane. Sudden summer storms, so the risk can arrive without warning mid-trade.
  • Seasonal trade. Hobart over summer and Darwin through the dry season see far more foot traffic on the same floor.

We set inspection intervals against your conditions rather than a national template, and tighten them when the weather turns.

Why is a retail floor the riskiest surface you look after?

Four things that decide whether the floor is under control.

A record of when each zone was checked

A clean floor at close does not tell anyone what happened at 2pm. What helps is a log of each check, by zone and by time.

We record both, every attendance, so the question of when a zone was last checked has an answer rather than a guess.

The entry is the hazard, not the aisle

Water and grit arrive on shoes faster than most cleaning schedules allow for. Saturated matting stops absorbing and starts spreading.

We treat entries as their own zone on their own interval, tightened when the weather turns. Matting gets lifted and cleaned rather than vacuumed in place, and we tell you when it has stopped working.

Day presentation and the full clean, quoted separately

These are different jobs. One keeps the floor safe and saleable while customers are in it, the other puts back what a trading day removed.

Quoting them as one number is how stores end up with an evening clean and no daytime cover. You see both layers on the scope with their own frequencies.

Centre rules handled, not just your store's

A tenancy inside a shopping centre inherits the centre's rules as well as its own. Dock bookings, access outside trading hours, waste room procedure and contractor inductions all sit on top of the cleaning scope.

We handle that administration rather than pushing the forms back to a busy store manager. It gets done once and stays current.

The hard question after a slip is rarely how well the floor was cleaned. It is when that part of the floor was last looked at.

What backs a crew working in front of your customers?

They are in your store while you are trading.

Intervals agreed in writing

Zones, frequencies and sign-off before the first attendance.

$10 million public liability

Insurance cover in place for work on your premises.

Equipment and signage supplied

Including wet floor signage.

Presentable in front of customers

Uniformed crews, quiet equipment in trading hours.

Hazards reported

Leaks, lifting vinyl and worn matting raised in writing.

A Shining Services cleaner working through a hotel corridor after hours

Photos every visit

A dated report with the times attached.

What do our customers say about us?

How is a retail cleaning quote worked out?

Four steps, with both layers quoted separately.

Site walkthrough

Surface type, entries, foot traffic and trading hours.

Two-layer scope

Day intervals and before-open or after-close tasks, each with its own frequency.

Induction and access

Store and centre inductions, dock bookings and access approval.

Service and records

Timed attendances with a dated report after each one.

Foot traffic drives the quote more than floor area. A small, busy store on a corner site carries more work than a larger quiet one, and the inspection interval has to reflect that.

Peak trading periods are quoted up front so Christmas does not arrive as an invoice surprise.

Request a site walkthrough

What restorative work happens outside trading hours?

Scheduled through the year, so the floor never needs rescuing.

Hard floor scrub and buff

Vinyl and tile brought back before wear becomes damage.

Grout and coving scrub

Where mopping stopped making a difference. Tile & grout →

High-level dusting

Lighting tracks, signage and the tops of tall shelving.

Matting advice

We tell you when matting has stopped doing its job.

Which regions do we cover?

Strip shops, centre tenancies, supermarkets, department stores and showrooms in Darwin, Perth, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Tasmania. Tell us the address and we will arrange a walkthrough.

What do retailers ask before they change cleaners?

Do you clean during trading hours or outside them?

Both, scoped as two separate layers. Day cleaning covers floor checks, entries, spills and customer amenities while you trade, and the full clean runs from 6am before you open or in the evening after close, until 10pm.

What records do we get?

A timed attendance log showing which zone was checked and when, plus a dated report with photographs after every attendance. If anyone asks when an area was last looked at, you have the answer.

Can you work inside a shopping centre?

Yes, and we handle the centre administration rather than sending it to your store manager. That covers contractor induction, loading dock and lift bookings, access approval and the waste room procedure.

Do you cover deli and bakery areas in a supermarket?

Those areas carry food safety obligations, with a clean and sanitise step on food contact surfaces. We can service them, but they get written as a separate part of the agreement with named products and contact times.

What about showroom glass and displays?

Showroom work leans towards glass and detail rather than floors. Entry glass, display windows, glazed partitions and display surfaces carry most of the value, and the clean usually runs from 6am before opening.

Can you respond to a spill during trade?

Where we hold a day cleaning layer, yes. Wet floor signage goes out straight away and comes back in once the area is dry, and every response is logged with a time.

We stay until it's right

Our cleaners don't leave until you're happy with the work. For end of lease cleans, if you're not satisfied and tell us within 72 hours, we come back and re-clean.
