Leather Cleaning and Conditioning Services in Australia

Leather almost always fails in the same place first, and it is the spot your head rests on. Cleaning and conditioning is about getting to that before the finish cracks, because once it does nothing brings it back. Homes, offices and restaurants, in seven regions.

We work out what your leather actually is before we touch it, clean the oils out, then put the conditioning back. Some lounges sold as leather cannot be saved, and we say so. Our cleaners don't leave until you're happy with the work.

What is the difference between cleaning leather and conditioning it?

Cleaning takes body oils, soil and old product off the surface. Conditioning puts oils back into the hide so it stays flexible instead of drying out and cracking.

They have to happen in that order. Conditioning over a dirty lounge seals the grime in and leaves a film that attracts more of it.

Damage is a repair, not a clean. Tears, splits and cracks through the finish cannot be cleaned back, so we offer leather repair, quoted once we have seen the piece. Peeling coated furniture has nothing underneath to repair, and we will tell you so.

For fabric lounges see upholstery cleaning. For leather seating in a venue on a schedule, see restaurant and cafe cleaning.

How often does leather need doing?

More often than people think, and long before it looks like it needs it.

Every 6 to 12 months

Standard for a lounge in daily use. By the time leather looks dry the finish has usually already started to go.

Every 3 to 6 months

Anything in direct sun, near a heating or cooling vent, or carrying heavy daily use from a family.

On a contract

Restaurant booths, reception lounges, boardroom chairs and club seating, where body contact is constant.

What happens to a leather lounge on the day?

Four stages, and the first one decides everything after it.

Identify and test

  • Leather type established
  • Finish checked for wear
  • Colourfastness tested out of sight
  • Existing damage photographed
  • Method confirmed with you

Clean

  • Loose soil vacuumed from seams
  • Body oils lifted off the surface
  • Old product residue removed
  • Piping and stitching worked by hand
  • Under and behind the cushions

Condition

  • Conditioner matched to the leather
  • Worked in, not just wiped over
  • Extra on headrests and armrests
  • Buffed back to an even finish
  • Left touch dry, not greasy

Where leather actually dies

  • Headrests, from hair and skin oils
  • Armrest front edges
  • The seam along the seat front
  • Anywhere a vent blows on it
  • The side facing the window

A shiny dark patch on a headrest is not dirt sitting on the leather. It is the finish breaking down, and it is the last warning before the surface starts to crack.

How do we know what your leather actually is?

Because the wrong product on the wrong hide is not reversible.

  1. Step 01

    Finish checked

Protected, semi-aniline and aniline leather all behave differently with water.

  2. Step 02

    Backing inspected

Reconstituted and coated products look like leather until you check the reverse and the edges.

  3. Step 03

    Tested out of sight

A hidden panel first, every time, even on a lounge we have cleaned before.

  4. Step 04

    You get the verdict

What it is, what we can do, and honestly what we cannot.

What dries out leather in Australian homes?

Leather fails from losing its oils, and sun, heating and cooling all work to take them out.

  • Perth and Adelaide. Hard sun and low humidity together dry leather out quickly
  • Darwin. The opposite problem. Mould grows on leather through the wet season, especially on furniture against an outside wall
  • Melbourne and Tasmania. Ducted heating all winter does the same job to leather that air conditioning does up north in summer
  • Everywhere. The side of the lounge facing the window ages years ahead of the rest of it

Which is why we condition heavier on the sun side and the headrests rather than evenly across the whole piece.

Why does leather crack on the headrest first?

Four things that decide how long a leather lounge lasts.

It starts with knowing what you own

Some furniture sold as leather is reconstituted: leather scraps glued to a backing under a coating. When it peels there is nothing underneath to clean.

We check the backing and the edges before anything else, then tell you what you actually have. Cleaning a peeling coated lounge does not save it, and we will not charge you to try.

Cleaned first, then conditioned, never the other way around

Conditioner applied over a dirty lounge seals the body oils and soil underneath it, then leaves a film that collects more of both.

The two stages happen in that order and they use completely different products. Many shelf products are conditioners, which is why a home job can look worse a few months later.

Headrests and armrests get the real work

Leather does not wear out evenly. Hair and skin oils break the finish down where your head and arms sit, years ahead of the rest of the piece.

Those areas get cleaned harder and conditioned heavier than the panels nobody ever touches. A dark shiny headrest is a finish failing rather than a patch of dirt, and it is the last warning you get.

Sun and climate control do the rest

Strong sun dries the oils out of a hide, even through a window. Air conditioning in summer and ducted heating in winter both do the same thing from the other direction.

So we condition heavier on the window side and near vents rather than evenly across the piece. Even coverage looks tidy and ignores where the damage actually happens.

By the time leather looks like it needs conditioning, the finish has usually been failing for a year. It is a maintenance job, not a rescue one.

What backs someone working on your lounge?

Leather is unforgiving and mistakes show. Here is what sits behind it.

Tested out of sight first

A hidden panel before any visible area.

Existing damage photographed

Recorded before we start.

Products matched to the hide

Not one bottle used on everything.

Floors and walls protected

We work around your furniture, not through it.

We decline what we cannot fix

Better a short conversation than a bad result.

Happy before we leave

Our cleaners don't leave until you're happy with the work.

What do customers say about their leather?

How is leather cleaning priced?

By the seat, and by what condition it is in.

Tell us the pieces

How many seats, plus recliners, ottomans and dining chairs.

Send a photo

Close up of a headrest and an armrest tells us most of what we need.

Fixed written quote

Confirmed on site after testing, before anything is applied.

Seats drive the price, not floor space. A three seater and two recliners is five seats plus the mechanisms, and recliners take longer than anything else because of the folds and the gaps around the frame.

Commercial seating is quoted per site rather than per seat.

What else gets done in the same visit?

The crew is already there, so these cost less booked together.

Office and boardroom seating

Early morning or evening, before staff are back.

Leather repair

Tears, splits and cracked panels, quoted once we have seen them.

Leather protection

Applied after conditioning on protected leather.

What do people ask before booking leather cleaning?

Is my lounge actually real leather?

Not always, and it is worth knowing before you spend money on it. Reconstituted leather is scraps glued to a backing under a coating, and it peels rather than wears. We check the backing and the edges at the start and tell you what you have.

Can you fix cracked leather?

Cleaning cannot, because a crack through the finish is damage rather than dirt. We do offer leather repair for cracks, splits and tears, quoted after we see it, since the fix depends on the leather and how far the damage goes. Conditioning the areas around it stops the cracking spreading.

How often should leather be conditioned?

Every six to twelve months for a lounge in daily use, and every three to six if it sits in sun or near a vent. Waiting until it looks dry means waiting too long, because the finish starts failing before the surface shows it.

Can I just wipe it down with baby wipes?

No. Wipes and household sprays carry alcohols and detergents that strip the protective finish, which is the layer doing all the work. Once that has gone the hide underneath takes the wear directly.

Will cleaning take the colour off?

Not if the leather is identified and tested first, which is why we do a hidden panel before anything visible. Aniline leather has no protective topcoat and behaves completely differently to a standard protected lounge. Using one method on both is how colour comes away.

How long before we can sit on it again?

A couple of hours in most cases, and it is touch dry rather than greasy when we leave. Commercial jobs are booked early in the morning or in the evening, so the seating is back in service for trading. We give you a straight time on the day.

Do you clean office chairs and restaurant booths?

Yes, along with reception lounges and club seating. Commercial work is quoted per site rather than per seat, and booked from 6am or into the evening around your trading hours. We do not clean car interiors.

How much does leather cleaning cost?

It is priced per seat and by condition, so a three seater with two recliners counts as five seats plus the mechanisms. Recliners take longer than anything else because of the folds and the gaps around the frame. Send a close photo of a headrest and an armrest and we can quote from that.

We stay until it's right

Our cleaners don't leave until you're happy with the work. For end of lease cleans, if you're not satisfied and tell us within 72 hours, we come back and re-clean.

Ready to get to it before it cracks?

Send a close photo of a headrest and an armrest. We can usually tell you what you own and what it will cost from that.
